The Boys & Girls Club of Lenawee in partnership with the Sam Beauford Woodworking Career Institute and the Adrian Noon Rotary will be hosting a free hands on skilled trade day camp. Your child is invited to participate in this free STEM learning event held in Adrian, Michigan. The students will be completing a variety of hands-on activities, including CNC machining, welding, woodworking, CAD/CAM design, painting and finishing. Upon completion of this 1 day camp, the students will have built and assembled 5 “park style” benches that will be then donated to the students various schools. The benches will have welded steel bases, wood seats, and a CNC carved wood backrest. Lunch and transportation will be provided free of charge to the students.
The purpose of this camp is to give the students an opportunity to complete the design and creation of a high quality item. The students will be reminded of their accomplishment for several years as the benches will be places in their respective schools. During the process the participants will be exposed to the several career path options that may be a good fit for him/her.
Skilled trades can be a very sustainable and rewarding career path. Demand is very high for skilled worker with a vocational certificate, and the demand is expected to grow over the next 20 years. According to Forbes, skilled trade workers are a disproportionately older population, and will only continue to get older, creating increased opportunities for young workers to fill their shoes. Your student may be a great fit for a trade school post-secondary education.
